We are seeking a full-time Backend Developer to to join our GIS Web Applications team, developing solutions for our utilities and natural resource clients.

As a member of the GIS Web Applications team, you will help build and maintain our Django applications, developing new features and supporting existing functionality. We’re a small but growing team of Software and GIS Developers, so you'll have significant impact on the direction of our applications and the opportunity to work closely with every team member.

As we continue to grow our platform, we are  seeking a Backend Software Developer who is excited about building robust, scalable systems. You will find plenty of opportunities to expand your skills and learn new technologies in a collaborative, supportive environment where your contributions directly shape the product.

Duties

As a Backend Software Developer, you will work on a variety of projects that encompass system design and data modelling, backend API design and development, data analysis, and integration with spatial technologies. Your responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Developing applications backed by a PostgreSQL spatial database, including query optimization.
  • Writing high-quality, clean and maintainable Python code, backed by robust automated test suite.
  • Participating in the development of new functionalities by designing and developing server-side services and APIs (Django).
  • Participating in every aspect of the development cycle, including refining specifications with the product owner, developing clean and maintainable code, writing unit and integration tests, doing code reviews, and maintaining and improving existing code.
  • Collaborating, supporting and sharing expertise with other team members.
  • Working closely with the GIS Team to deliver a high quality and consistent user experience.
  • Maintaining and continuously improve the building and delivery of our web services.
  • Investigating, evaluating, and resolving issues in live applications.

Qualifications

  • Formal education in Computer Science or related discipline.
  • 3+ years experience as a backend Django developer.
  • Strong relational database and SQL experience, ideally PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with HTMX, geospatial applications, and AWS is considered an asset.
  • Proficient in standards-compliant HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Excellent data management skills.
  • Self-directed with great communication and time management skills.
