Project Summary

Under a regional environmental services contract, DWB conducted a variety of environmental screening assessments for large, regional distribution and transmission assignments throughout the Northern Interior, Southern Interior and Lower Mainland regions. Office-based screening assessments were conducted using BC Hydro and other databases to assess and identify fish bearing streams and water resources, wildlife, species at risk, archeological sites, First Nations reserves, and land ownership for each structure. Deliverables for all environmental screening assessments include an output spreadsheet with all environmental assessment information and recommendations for mitigation, monitoring, and permitting if required.

Project Description

Where requirements for permitting or additional information was identified in order to assess and mitigate environmental and archeological impacts, DWB personnel conducted field assessments and communicated directly with designers regarding findings and design options. In 2018, DWB also completed Environmental Sensitivity Ratings (ESR) for over 250 substations located across the province to rate each substation’s risk to oil spills.

Following from these screenings and sensitivity rating assignments, DWB was retained to conduct environmental assessments and prepare Environmental Management Plans (EMP) for many projects in the Northern and Southern Interior. For these assignments DWB conducted permitting under the Water sustainability Act and the Wildlife Act and worked with regulatory agencies on behalf of BC Hydro. DWB provided environmental support to the BC Hydro project team, construction personnel and contractors. DWB’s team of qualified professionals also provided quality control and management of subcontractors to ensure compliance with the EMP, permits and provincial regulations.
